Fraction Moon Blood is a cult heavy-psych and hard rock album from 1971 by the Los Angeles band Fraction, long considered a “holy grail” for collectors due to its rarity and intense sound. The record mixes a raw, fuzzed-out psychedelic rock attack with dark, often Christian-themed lyrics and dramatic vocals from frontman Jim Beach.

Below is an overview of the history, sound, and legacy of this California working-class band.

The Origins of Fraction Moon Blood

Fraction was a working-class psychedelic hard rock band from Los Angeles, California. Their lineup featured Jim Beach on vocals, Don Swanson on lead guitar, Robert Meinel on rhythm guitar, Victor Hemme on bass, and Curt Swanson on drums.

Recorded around 1970 and released in 1971, the album was pressed in extremely small numbers. Commonly cited as consisting of about 200 copies, this limited run is the main reason original LPs became very valuable and highly sought after by enthusiasts.

A Raw Sound Defined by Heavy Psych Rock

The recording style of Moon Blood contributes significantly to its reputation. Tracked on a shoestring budget in roughly three hours, the band recorded live in the studio in single takes with no overdubs, giving the final product an unpolished but very powerful feel.

Musically, the album is defined by heavy psychedelic rock featuring wah-wah guitars and thick fuzz. The songs contain dynamic shifts, moving from haunted, soft passages to explosive, almost proto-metal sections. The sound is often compared to The Doors, MC5, early Stooges, and sometimes Black Sabbath.

Christian Themes and Lyrical Content

The album’s lyrics are filled with intense, sometimes apocalyptic Christian imagery. Themes of fire-and-brimstone, temptation, and spiritual struggle contribute to the album’s reputation in the “Christian psych” underground.

Despite the religious subject matter, the mood is dense, mystical, and slightly sinister. Critics describe the atmosphere as more like a hazy psychedelic dusk than anything serene or worshipful, which makes the religious angle feel unusual and ambiguous.

Key Tracks on the Album

The original LP features five long tracks that often flow into each other, feeling like a continuous dark psych suite.

  • “Sanc-Divided”: A melancholic opener that builds into a storm of fuzz and wailing vocals.
  • “Come Out of Her”: A track with a massive, anguished chorus and searing wah-wah soloing.
  • “Eye of the Hurricane”: Clocking in at nearly nine minutes, this is often cited as the album’s centerpiece, possessing a post-apocalyptic jam feel.
  • “This Bird / Sky High”: Closes the album with spoken-word, Doors-like sections that erupt into high-octane rock.

Modern Reissues and Legacy

Today, Moon Blood maintains a high collector status. Original pressings have sold for very high prices and are frequently called one of the top “holy grails” of heavy psych and Christian psych rock.

For listeners who cannot acquire an original, labels such as RidingEasy Records and Noble Records have released modern reissues. These releases, which sometimes include bonus tracks from rehearsal tapes, make it much easier to hear the album without tracking down a rare original copy.
