GRANICUS is a rare, collectible 1973 RCA progressive hard rock LP that transcends the early ’70s scene, delivering manic energy, powerful riffs, and scorching vocals that stand shoulder to shoulder with giants like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath.
This self-titled Granicus album is a hard prog / proto-metal masterpiece originally released by RCA Records in 1973, packed with high-energy, complex arrangements and outrageous vocal performances that could have hit big in teenage wasteland America if it had received proper promotion. Frontman Woody Leffel channels a high-powered style reminiscent of classic hard rock vocalists, backed by twin guitars, bass, and drums pushing into extreme sonic territory.
Rather than grind the local club circuit, the band would shed in a Cleveland warehouse and an upstate New York house, honing original material before cutting this LP in about ten days for RCA and hitting the road with acts like Cactus, Bob Seger, and Spirit. Though it initially sank without a trace on release, original pressings soon became premium-priced trophies in NYC collector shops, and the record is now prized worldwide as a top-shelf vintage hard progressive underground rock album.
Half a century later, this LP remains a potent, high-adrenaline listen—flirting with heavy prog complexity while hitting with raw hard rock impact, leaving you dizzy by the end of side one and gasping to flip to side two. Thematically, it dives into the sordid, almost apocalyptic underbelly of early ’70s America, culminating in what plays like a full-on rock and roll exorcism—appropriately, the band took its name from the Battle of the Granicus, where Alexander the Great defeated the Persian Empire in 334 BC
Took my daughter to Noble Records for the first time today. Friendly staff, cool spot. Store was easy to navigate. My daughter found the Blink album she wanted & we left. Will definitely be back
