Heavy Psychedelic Gem: The Story Behind Samuel Prody’s Lost 1971 Heavy‑Rock Classic

The Samuel Prody album is a British early‑70s psychedelic hard‑rock record that has become a cult heavy‑prog rarity despite being virtually unknown in its home country at the time of release. Originally issued only in Germany in 1971, the self-titled record has been reissued in recent years.

Origins of the Band and the Samuel Prody Album

The group evolved out of an earlier band called Giant, which at one point included Pretty Things drummer Viv Prince. The band intended to call themselves “Samuel Purdy.” Still, they were advised to change the spelling to “Prody” to avoid legal trouble with the famous shotgun manufacturer, James Purdy & Sons.

The core Samuel Prody line‑up featured Tony Savva (bass, guitar, lead vocals), Derek “Mort” Smallcombe (lead guitar, vocals), John Boswell (drums, vocals), and Stephen Day (bass, vocals). Smallcombe was formerly of the cult psych band Jason Crest. Together, the group played a heavy, guitar‑driven blend of hard rock and psychedelia, defined by prominent distorted riffs, wild vocals, and extended jams.

Production and Global Records Release

Although recorded in England, the Samuel Prody album was released in Germany by Global Records in 1971. This specific release strategy helped make original pressings very scarce and expensive among collectors.

A significant factor in the record’s enduring reputation is its production quality. It was engineered by Roy Thomas Baker, who later became famous for his work with Queen. Reviews characterize the record as solidly heavy with strong playing and consistently sharp instrumentation.

Key Tracks and Sound

The album contains seven tracks, often described as a heavy‑rock or heavy‑prog classic of the era. The sound moves between hard‑rock stompers like “She’s Mine” and “Mr. Make Believe” to more experimental passages.

The record closes with the nearly nine‑minute epic “Hallucination.” This extended piece moves through several stylistic sections and is often singled out by collectors as a highlight.

Tracklist:

  • Side A: Who Will Buy, Woman, Time Is All Mine, Scat Shuffle
  • Side B: She’s Mine, Mr. Make Believe, Hallucination

Modern Reissues and Noble Records

Because of its limited original release and later bootlegs, the Samuel Prody album developed a reputation as an underground favorite among collectors of obscure early‑70s heavy rock and prog.

In 2024, the Spanish label Guerssen Records released the first-ever band-sanctioned reissue, which includes the band’s history and photos. Additionally, Noble Records released an exclusive “Purple Marbled Vinyl” edition of this reissue, limited to roughly 700 copies, catering to fans of psychedelic and hard-to-find rock.
